Rescuers found the dog, who they are calling Brooke, near the intersection of Newton and Clyde streets in Brookline on Wednesday, Jan. 24, MSPCA officials said Monday. The rescue came "not a second too soon" as Brooke was near death from starvation.
“This dog was in bad shape when she came to us,” said Mike Keiley, vice president of the MSPCA-Angell’s Animal Protection Division. “On a scale of one to nine, with one being extremely emaciated and nine being obese, she had a body condition score of one.”
Brooke weighed 10 pounds when she should have weighed at least 20 for her age and size. Veterinarians at the Angell Animal Medical Center in Jamaica Plain put her on a specialized diet to help her add weight and bring her back to good health.
So far, Brooke has made good progress, the MSPCA said in a news release. Her rescuers said the dog is very playful and sweet despite her condition.
“It’s always hard to see loving animals like Brooke suffer so much,” Keiley added. “We want to know how it got to this point, and we need people’s help to do that.”
